The
most important part of caring for butterfly bushes is watering
them. Butterfly bushes will need a fair amount of water during
the hotter summer months, but not a whole lot. Once established,
butterfly bushes will survive with watering as infrequently
as once a month. Butterfly bushes will also grow better when
given a light fertilizer in the early spring months.
Another
part of butterfly bush care is pruning. Most butterfly bushes
will only flower on new growth, and should therefore be pruned
to the ground once they have become dormant. In warmer regions,
caring for butterfly bushes will more closely resemble evergreen
care, as they will often become evergreens. Caring for butterfly
bushes that have become evergreens can also mean pruning back
to the soil, but this can be done any time of the year.
